Today, Christmas traditions in France differ. It is a very important occasion for the French, because they care very much about family unity and it is mandatory for all members to gather at the table. The French children place their shoes in front of the home, hoping that Pere Noel or Papa Noel (Santa Claus) or "le petit Jesus" ("little Jesus") will fill them with gifts. Candies, fruits, nuts and small toys are hung on the branches of the Christmas tree. There is also a Pere Fouettard (Father Fouettard), who has the duty to beat the children who have been naughty throughout the year.
